CHAPTER 11
I called Mickey’s cell as I pondered our next move. From all appearances, Frick and Frack, otherwise known as Scarface and Rhino, were still beating a hasty retreat, but that old adage about not lingering at the scene of the crime was beginning to loom large. This time they’d tried to intimidate me with fists and a blackjack. If we remained here, maybe they’d be back with reinforcements who could up the ante. The limo swooped over to the curb and came to an abrupt stop.
“Where to, boss?” he asked.
The Russian accents of these two new assailants bothered me. Like déjà vu all over again. It was like I’d sidestepped into an old Sean Connery James Bond movie.
I looked at Kali. “We need to vacate the area here. Plus I want to talk with Max and let him know that another pair of foreign thugs tried to jump me. Even he’s smart enough to catch the pattern.”
“Max?”
“Oh, sorry. Max Kaminsky. A police buddy of mine.” I told Mickey to take us to Midtown North on Fifty-fourth Street.
At the precinct I made my usual request for Detective Kaminsky. It was getting to be a habit. At least there was a different guy working the desk than I’d seen the last time, so he told us to have a seat on the bench and he’d see. After a fifteen-minute wait that seemed like an eternity, Max came ambling out from the back and nodded.
“Hey, Belz, how you doing?”
“Great, considering we’ve been waiting so long our feet are stuck to the floor.”
“Well, pardon me all to hell,” he said, bristling.
This wasn’t starting out too well. “Look, Max, I didn’t mean to sound cocky, but two thugs just tried to beat the hell out of us.”
His heavy eyebrows almost knitted together. “Shit, you all right?”
“We’re fine.”
“Where’d this happen at?”
“Forty-third Street, over by Tenth.”
“I hope you made out a report.”
I smiled. “Actually, our first thought was to come over and talk to you.”
“You keep saying ‘our.’ You mean you got a witness?”
I turned slightly and Kali stood up. “You should have seen him, Detective. He was great. Took out those two punks like,” she canted her head and looked at me, “he was Chuck Norris or somebody.”
“Thank you,” I said, giving her a wink.
“I doubt he was that good.” Max looked her up and down, with a hint of salaciousness in his eyes. “Say, who’s your friend, Belz?”
“May I present Ms. Kalisha Carter, my personal assistant. And this is Max Kaminsky, the best detective on the NYPD.”
“Aw, go on,” Max said, guffawing at the compliment, and shook hands with Kali. “Anyway, this altercation sounds like something I’d like to hear about.” Max motioned for us to follow him. He led us down a corridor and cut left, ushering us into a break room. Several plastic chairs were scattered around the room along with a couple of cheap Formica tables, a beat-up old TV mounted on the wall. The brackets looked ready to give way any minute from the dull greenish paint of the cinder block walls.
